Patient Handling / Person Moving Course

Course Information

The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills that are required to ensure safe and comfortable patient handling/ person moving for the care giver and the patient/ client. 

Outline Syllabus:

•    Manual Handling legislation
•    Anatomy and Physiology of the back 
•    Common back injuries resulting from incorrect manual handling 
•    Biomechanics of manual handling 
•    Hazard identification & Risk assessment 
•    Principles of safe Patient Handling/ Person Moving
•    Patient handling demonstration, practice and assessment (this may include the following and can be adapted to the individual or the Care setting requirements):
-    Sitting patient up in bed
-    Sitting patient to edge of bed 
-    Turning patient in bed
-    Moving patient in bed using slide sheets 
-    Standing/ transferring patient from bed to chair
-    Use of hoist
 

Participant Profile:

This course is a perfect match for you or your staff if the work requires or will potentially include the need for Patient handling or Person Moving. All staff who are engaged in these tasks on a day to day basis should have the ability to do this safely for their own, their clients and the employers benefit. During this course we will cover everything you need to know in order for you to gain Patient Handling Certification.

Course Details

Objective:

  • Participants will understand the anatomy of the back and the causes of common back injuries 
  • Participants will have an understanding of the principles of safe manual handling and patient handling techniques 
  • Participants will have the ability to identify risk factors and generate solutions when considering patient handling tasks
  • Participants will have the ability to perform patient handling/ person moving  correctly and safely 
     

Duration: 6 hours

Method:

This training will be provided by an experienced trainer with many years of practical hands on experience in Patient handling in a variety of clinical settings. Training can be adapted to include the specific requirements of either the care giver or the service responsible for care provision. 
A Power point presentation will be used to provide students with the requisite background knowledge of Manual Handling and Patient Handling thereby enhancing the student’s ability to apply this knowledge into their work practice. The session will include a practical demonstration of manual handling techniques followed by Patient Handling techniques. The student will then be given the opportunity to practice these techniques followed by an assessment of these skills.

Patient Handling/ Person Moving Certificate valid for 2 years
